How Can I Get Well-Paying Freelance Commercial Writing Jobs?

If you want to start as a commercial freelance writer and you want well-paying freelance writing jobs there are a few things you should know.

  • When you start out as a freelance writer it is going to be a challenge. Most people do not make a significant profit, something high enough that they can use to replace their current income until after one or two years of work. If you are willing to put in the effort it takes to build the foundation for success you will in fact achieve it. But for some people who are looking to instantly quit their job because they hate their boss and start freelance writing, this is not necessarily a viable option. Freelance writing is a wonderful career path but it brings with it its own unique set of challenges. You might not have a boss looming over you and constantly complaining but you will still have frustrating clients or rude clients who act just as poorly as your boss.

  • It is not always going to be easy. And you will not always get high-paying jobs. If you want high-paying jobs and you are not absolutely the most qualified commercial freelance writer on the website where you are looking for the jobs, you may have to take some their lesser paying. But taking a job that does not pay top dollar when you're first starting out is not a bad thing. These jobs can help give you the steppingstones that you need to acquire the high-paying jobs. If you work with a regular client you might be able to negotiate for higher salary as you continue to work with them for years. If you complete something for a popular website or newspaper and you have permission to share it, or you have author ship, you can use that to show other clients why you should receive well-paying jobs.

  • Make sure you have a thorough portfolio and profile. If you want top paying jobs you have to show them who you are, where you are located, and your background. Top paying jobs are not going to hire a client who has no picture on their portfolio / profile, who offers no writing samples, and who gives no information about their background. Be thorough and make sure you present a comprehensive picture of your talent and your skills.
